Tony and Suzanne

Caretakers are a necessity for schools. Without them, it would not be a clean environment for the kids. We rarely notice them, but we should really appreciate them. They are an important part of the John Paul I High School community. Tony is a caretaker with over twelve years’ experience who works at John Paul. Tony wanted to become a caretaker for…. THE BIG MONEY! “Another day, another dollar”, he says.

He has been inspired by his karate teacher. His karate teacher is always calm, disciplined, strong, and always leads him on the right path. His success as a caretaker is always based at the end of the day, when the school is clean and knows he has done a good job. Tony ensures that the school is always clean. He cleans all the classrooms at the end of each day after school. If something is broken, he fixes it. One thing that really bothers him though is when kids don’t care about their stuff.

All the caretakers work very hard so we can learn in a clean environment. Therefore, we should appreciate and respect their dedication in keeping the school clean…. FOR US!

As I said before, without the caretakers, our school would be a big mess. Caretakers help us a lot, but we don’t seem to notice. They really are an important part of the John Paul I community. Suzanne, a caretaker at John Paul 1 High School, has eighteen years’ experience. Born in Caplon Gaspé, Suzanne originally wanted to be a secretary. She was inspired by her mother and sister, but mostly by children. she soon realized that this type of job was not for her as it was not a “moving job.” Sitting down, answering calls, was not an active job. That’s when she decided to be a caretaker. She liked to meet people and do active things. If you really like what you do and you appreciate what you get out of it, you are happy. At John Paul I High School, Suzanne is responsible for the heating and ventilation systems. She makes sure the school is warm in winter and cool in summer. She is also responsible for answering calls, putting salt outside in the winter, and most of all, for keeping the school spotless. Suzanne works very hard to keep the school clean for us. Therefore, we should respect, care for, and appreciate her dedication.

Breaking Dawn part 2

Breaking Dawn Part 2 came out November 15th, 2012. Many fans were super excited about it. In this epic finale, Bella first experiences being a vampire and feels like she was born to be one. The family underestimates her before they find out the many things she can do with ease. Edward and Bella endure many difficulties with their fast growing daughter, Renesmee. However, they find out that one of their cousins, Irina, thinks that Renesmee is an immortal child and has gone to tell the Volturi about it. The Volturi intend to come and kill Renesmee since it is against the vampire's law. Bella, Edward, and the family leave in search for relatives and friends around the world to witness Renesmee grow and prove to the Volturi that their daughter is not an immortal child. This movie has the most amazing action throughout the Twilight series. Vampire's heads come off, werewolves dying, the ground splits into two, and much more action. You will be jumping off your seats in shock during the movie. The final part of this movie was the most perfect and romantic way to end it as you see Bella and Edward's history together. It has been a great four years of vampire action and true love with Bella and Edward and the Cullen's.

Zumba time

Last Tuesday, I had the opportunity to interview Laticia Nieto, a Zumba instructor that comes to our school every Tuesday to teach students new dance moves. At the same time, Zumba is a very fun & physical activity to get your heart rate going! I sat down with Ms. Nieto to ask her a few questions:

- “ How long have you been a Zumba instructor?”
“ I have been doing this for 5 years.”
- “ How long are the Zumba classes?”
 “They are about an hour.”
_  “ Do you think this group is becoming successful?”
   “ Yes.”
-   “ How do you choose your music?”
“ I have to obviously like the song, then I see if the dance moves match to the music.”
-  “ How long have you liked dancing?”
“ I loved dancing ever since I was a little girl.”
- “ Do you ever get tired of being a Zumba instructor?”
“No I don’t, I love what I am doing so I never get tired.”
- “ How do you get certified to become an instructor?”
“ Anyone can get certified. You can go try out and you can get certified on the same day.’
- “How long have you been at our school doing Zumba?”
- “ I have been here since the end of September.”

That’s all the time we had before she started her class!

John Paul Helps Troops

Ms.Halsey recently came up with an extraordinary idea. Let's send care packages to our troops in Afghanistan. Her brother-in law was in the Canadian forces and her husband was in the U.S marine core. She also wanted to make the students at John Paul 1 aware of what the soldiers go through during their time away She decided to send care packages of baby wipes for the soldiers to bathe with when they’re away from their base, good lip balm since they don’t have that over there and Tim Hortons coffee or anything with maple to remind them of home. The students at John Paul had a dress down day where students donated many of these items. The day was a complete success. When the soldiers came to pick up these boxes, Ms. Halsey described them as being overjoyed, and touched by our act of kindness.

How fast are you?

The Rubik's cube was invented in 1974 by a Hungarian professor of architecture, Erno Rubik. This mind-puzzling cube was released in 1980. It is now the biggest selling toy world-wide. With over 43 quintillion wrong patterns, we are lucky to have Mr. Sivilla run our Rubik's cube club. Mr. Sivilla shows the students how to work their minds to solve this puzzle. The students get to interact with new people, have competitions, and set new records. What better way is there to spend a lunch time!

Ring pop fundraising

Mr. Pantano started a fundraising program to help the homeless children of Montreal. His idea was to sell ring pops to the students of John Paul then donate the money to Dans la Rue which helps kids find shelter, get enough food to eat, and enough water to drink. He was very surprised how supportive the students of John Paul were. Every day he had lineups of students wanting to buy a ring pop. Thanks to Mr. Pantano's tenacity and the students' generosity, they were able to reach the goal of raising over $1000. Great job!

Players in the teachers vs students game

________________________________________________________

Everyone in the filled gymnasium thoroughly enjoyed the game. The game lasted 40 minutes and the students skipped their 3rd period. They were very happy. Between the periods of the game, students were given raffle tickets and whoever won received a beautiful soccer ball. Tristan De Sousa scored the first goal. At the end of the first period, the teachers led 3-2. During the second period of the game the teachers scored but the students caught up to the teachers 4-4. In the third period the teachers scored a goal however the students could not find the net. Finally, during the last period, the students equalized the score 6-6 until, with 2 seconds of the game remaining, Johnny Sully took a shot and ended up scoring. The students finally won! Everyone came out of that gym very happy.

Advice Column

I like this guy but he’s becoming a jerk. What should I do?

Ans: You should talk to him about the way he’s acting. If he denies the fact that he’s becoming a jerk, find a way to prove it to him. If he’s being nice to you, there shouldn’t be a problem

How do you deal with the fact that the boy you like likes someone else?

Ans: Try to get closer to the guy. Be friends with him and try to accept the fact That he likes someone else. Don’t be upset because then that will make it worse. You don’t want to cause more trouble. • How do you get a girl’s attention? Ans: Be gentlemen. Girls love a guy with a sense of humour. Try to stand out from the other boys. Be nice to her and treat her like she’s the only one for you. Give her complements and just act like a really good friend. You never know what you might accomplish when doing this. Don’t forget to show your talents. She might be attracted to that.

It's Bieber time

On the night of Justin Bieber's concert, you could feel the excitement from all 15,000 fans in the Montreal Bell Center. As minutes went by, all the crazy fans screamed louder and louder. The lights went down and the crowd went crazy. It was probably the loudest crowd I had ever heard. Then a video started playing and all we saw was Justin Bieber coming on stage with a pair of wings. It made every single person in the Bell Center smile. Even if the wings were a little bazaar, it didn’t matter because at least Justin Bieber was actually there! He is a fantastic performer and I think many people agree with me. He sang a lot of new songs from his album Believe. He also sang many of his older songs like Baby, Eenie Meenie and One Time. His vocal performances was amazing, especially when he sang his song “Fall” in acoustic. Justin had said a million times that he was so happy to be home, in Canada. This 18-year-old boy is an amazing performer, he can dance, play guitar, the drums, piano and trumpet, and most of all SING! Montreal can’t wait till he comes back. He puts a smile on our faces and most of all makes us “Believe.”

Students help the community

Mr. Lacroce, our school spiritual animator, has already involved students in many activities. In November we had a Remembrance Day ceremony. Veterans came to talk to us about their experiences. We collected non-perishable food items for the spirit of giving and, at the same time, CTV came to our school to talk about the food drive. We also started a new project involving the secondary 2 students. We will be doing a spiritual grad video that will include pictures and videos from secondary 1 and secondary 2. It will be shown at the farewell dance. In November there was a We Day concert for the Free the Children Foundation and Mr. Lacroce took about 16 students with him to go to the concert. There were a lot of inspiring speeches and performances by Tyler Shaw and Shawn Desman. There are many more activities that will be taking place in our school. We had the Huggies Valentine's Day project and a few students will be going to the Montreal Children's Hospital and giving the sick children gifts. More activities will take place throughout the next few months.

Enjoy your retirement!

Ms. Margaret has been a secretary for about 26 years and enjoys working at John Paul. She has been a part of our administration since 2001. Her favorite part of the job is the interaction with the students. “We have a great bunch of students here at John Paul."

One of her favorite things to do is to write the letters about the upcoming events. She says it lets her be creative. To be a secretary you have to have a lot of self-control. You need to learn how to deal with frustrated students and parents. It is important to know how to calm down callers over the phone. Her least favorite part of the job is writing suspension letters. Other than being an extraordinary secretary, she also loves to paint and take walks to relax. She loves to read but never has anytime for it. She says “when you choose a job you have to enjoy it, it’s not all about money."

Ms. Margaret has worked many years for all of us. Hopefully her upcoming retirement will give her the rest and relaxation she so richly deserves.

Lunch club

The lunch club is my favorite place in school because Mrs. O’Connor teaches us how to be responsible and not to bully anyone. I make friends with students and it provides different fun activities at lunchtime. There is table hockey, puzzles, reading books, jeopardy, and dominos. My favorites games are chess and jenga. Chess is a brain teaser game which challenges our brain. Most of my friends are better than me, and I usually lose the game. I feel very happy though, because my friends teach me how to play. On special days such as Halloween and Christmas, the lunch club provides special movies. Sometimes, we don’t even have to bring our own lunch because the lunch club serves us pizza and junk food.

Spirit of giving

pi

During our recent successful student vs teacher soccer game, the students showed a great deal of community spirit. Everyone pitched in by donating non perishable food or one dollar to get into the game. As much as the game was fun, the school's Spirit of Giving event raised over 30 boxes filled with food to give to the less fortunate during Christmas. CTV news came to John Paul and talk about the spirit of giving. They were amazed on how many boxes of food were donated to this worthwhile cause. Lori Paranormal Activity 4.docx (seen above with our own Sabrina Scrabbi) was the reporter who came to report on the event.

Paranormal Activity 4

I recently went to see “Paranormal Activity 4” because I enjoyed the first three movies of the series. All in all however, the movie was the least enjoyable out of the four since it wasn’t as developed as the rest. The first half hour of the movie wasn’t very captivating and there were only scary parts nearing the end of the film. The film wasn’t very interesting to follow because there wasn’t a story line. The movie was just pieced together with parts that didn’t really follow and were set up to frighten the audience. The film was made up of standard scary scenes that one can find in almost any horror film. There was only one scene involving a demon at the end of the film which was very scary and I most probably will never forget it. I wouldn’t recommend this movie to someone who was looking for an interesting and captivating film but I would most definitely recommend this film to people who would like a good scare at the end!

Music at our school

dr

At John Paul 1 high school, we have many different activities happening during lunch time and after school; one of which is the band.

dr

There are four members in this band: two guitarists, one drummer, and a singer. The band is supervised by Mr. Demi and they hold their holds their practice each Wednesday after school in room 208.

The band plays popular songs that everyone knows and likes. We heard them play Live While We're Young by One Direction and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift. They did a great job but we prefered Live While We're Young because they were more on cue and they looked like they were having more fun. They seemed more confident with that song.

Make sure to come to their next event and be impressed by their talent.
